Estudo No. 1, for solo flute – Watching Professor Toninho Guimarães performing a recital of solo flute works by Brazilian composers, I was disappointed to observe that none of the pieces were composed by a woman!! I asked the asked him why and he replied that he had not found it in the literature. This gap inspired me to create a flute solo. I decided to create a study to explore some flute techniques and resources, which is the instrument I know and love the most! I used some modes that are very characteristic of Brazilian popular music and some dance rhythms like waltz and tango.
